Healthy Ganesh Chaturthi Sweets to Try This Year
Updated: 3 days ago
Festive does not have to mean off track; here are the modaks, sweets, and classics I am making this Ganpati season.
Ganesh Chaturthi has always meant a kitchen full of modaks and mithai in my house, and over the years I have found ways to bring all of that festive flavour to the table without the sugar crash that usually follows. These are the recipes I am leaning on this season, from protein packed modaks to a soothing kheer, along with a couple of everyday Maharashtrian classics that round out the celebration.

1. Ukdiche Modak, Two Ways
The classic steamed modak, made both ways in our kitchen this year. Mom’s traditional coconut and jaggery filling sits alongside my own high protein version, both wrapped in the same soft, steamed rice flour coating and finished with a saffron drizzle. This is the one that feels most like the festival itself.
2. Chocolate Banana Modak

A soft banana and coconut flour dough pressed into a modak mould, filled with melted chocolate and a cashew butter drizzle. Sweetened naturally and gently, with a scoop of protein powder folded in for good measure. This is the one I make when I want something quick, festive, and genuinely nourishing to close out the celebrations.

3. Mango Chocolate Protein Karanji
A mango spiced take on the classic karanji, wrapped around a square of ready-made chocolate hazelnut fudge and baked instead of fried. The mango purée keeps the dough soft and naturally sweet, and a mango flavoured protein powder gives it a little extra staying power. Perfect for surprising guests with something familiar in shape but different in flavour.

4. Ice Apple Kheer
A chilled, gentle kheer made with millet or vermicelli, coconut sugar, and fresh ice apples on top. I originally made this to soothe an upset stomach during a heat wave, and it has stayed in rotation ever since for how cooling and easy on the gut it is, which makes it a lovely, lighter dessert to serve alongside heavier festive food.

5. Iced Golden Milk Latte
A cooling, iced twist on classic haldi doodh, blended with hemp hearts for creaminess and a boost of plant based protein, omega-3s, and fibre. A nice way to work turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits into the celebrations, especially if the weather is still warm where you are.
